Complete your journey to becoming a Canadian citizen

You may be eligible for Canadian citizenship if you were born to a Canadian parent. Alternatively, if you are at least 18 years old and have resided in Canada for three years as a permanent resident, you may also qualify for citizenship. In certain circumstances, up to one year of time spent in temporary residence status can be counted towards meeting the 3-year requirement.

Citizenship by Birth

You may be eligible for Canadian citizenship if you were born to a Canadian parent, regardless of where you were born.

Citizenship by Naturalization

To become a Canadian citizen through naturalization, you must meet several requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a permanent resident of Canada
  • Have lived in Canada for at least 3 years (1,095 days) in the 5 years before applying
  • Have filed your taxes (if required)
  • Pass a citizenship test (if between 18-54 years old)
  • Prove your language skills in English or French

Residence Requirements

Understanding the physical presence requirement:

  • At least 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada
  • Within the 5 years immediately before the date of your application
  • Up to 365 days of temporary residence status can count towards the requirement
  • Time spent outside Canada may not count
